A Google search for Biddlestone shows that the SELBY family was granted land in the borders in A. D. 1272.The tower was probably built in the late fourteenth century, though possibly earlier. The tower was incorporated into a house in the seventeenth century.Biddlestone Hall was built ca. 1796 by Thomas SELBY.A Roman Catholic chapel designed by John DOBSON was commissioned by Walter SELBY and built on the remains of the tower in 1820. Biddlestone Hall may have been the basis for Osbaldistone Hall in "Rob Roy."
FamilySearch has Walter SELBY of Biddleston, b/bpt. 1785/7, s/o Thomas SELBY & Catherine HODS(H)ON.Walter m. Alicia SWARBRECK.There is an extensive pedigree, but I don't know whether it has been verified.
FamilySearch:Thomas SELBY, bpt. 4 N 1770, Rothbury, Northumberland, s/o Thomas, m. Elizabeth SOULSBY, bpt. 24 F 1771, Rothbury, d/o William.
Ralph MATHER & Ann SELBY are bu. Beechridge Cem., [now] Ste.-Clothilde, Quebec.Ralph & Ann had Ann MATHER, who m. John FINLAYSON & lived in Ste.-Clothilde, Quebec; Tilbury, Ont.; & Detroit, MI.Philip FINLAYSON was b. 1 Apr. 1845, bpt. 1846, Beechridge.
Could your Ralph MATHER be the one b. 20 May, bpt. 9 Je. 1788, Northumberland, s/o Geo. MATHER & Eloner? That would seem to fit the Beechridge tombstone inscription for approximate date, but FamilySearch says Northumberland, & cem. says North Durham.
Beechridge Cem., Ste.-Clothilde, Quebec (south of Montreal near the U. S. border):Ralph MATHER d. 2 Nov. 1861, aged 74, a native of North Durham, England. Wife Anne SELBY died 14 May 1847, aged 49, native of Rothbury, England. [Notice that the age doesn't quite fit Anne listed as b. 21 Jan. 1800, bpt. 23 F 1800, Rothbury.]
Left side: Mary Ann LAMB, wf/o Thomas MATHER, d. 8 Je. 1869, aged 35; their ch: James Lamb, d. 18 Apr. 1867, ae 4; Thomas James, d. 25 Apr. 1867, aged 1 y., 4 mos.; Andrew Wm., d. 9 May 1867, aged 6 y.

William MATHER, d. 9 Je. 1861, aged 29, wf. Hannah STRUTHER d. 25 Mar. 1917, aged 86.
John A. McLEOD (20 May 1850 - 1 Je. 1926) wf. Arabella F. MATHER (1857 - 1923) ch. Andrew W. F. M., drowned at Montreal, 11 May 1894, aged 10-7-5; Nancy Stuart, d. 7 S 1894, 5-2-4.
Can you add anything from your research of SELBY?
