Re: Origin of Seng family name

Wow here I am searching the net for the meaning of my last name until I came across this post. I am of Cambodian-Chinese decent carrying the last name of Seng. By what I heard from my mom, my great grandfather who is pure chinese came down to cambodia and got married. Any information about my great grandfather besides what was mention is unknown/lost because of the Khmer Rogue. To my knowledge I haven't met a single Asian person carrying the same last name as me yet so that tells me that Seng is unique and rare. At first I thought Seng was a chinese last name because of its sound when you say it(sounds Asian to me when I say it) then after searching the net I found out that it might be German and then finally here just perhaphs confirmed my first guess. This is just my assumption but when you say Seng, it would sound close to Sang or Sung depending on how you think the word would sound like. Now if it was close to Sung, then you could point a finger to the Song Dynasty (pronounced Sung if your chinese). The Song Dynasty at the time made a great amount of wealth through trading overseas, it was only in another Dynasty that proceeded it that all sea trades with foreigners was halted. I however always pronounce mines close to Sang but that might just be the influence of American pronunciation but even so it still sounds chinese. So Tom's info might really reign true.
