Hello Chris,
I am as puzzled as you are. The Seslers are not my direct line but my husband's paternal grandmother's cousin married William H. "Harry" Sesler. Here is what I have learned:
- There is a 2002 post by Shari who says "our Grandparent's Bible" then continues with "Her grandfather was Elmer Y. Sesler..." so I can't tell exactly whose Bible it is or accurate it might be.
- There is a nice RootsWeb WorldConnect entry on the Logan Co., OH, Seslers but the submitter has the same family listed under William Sesler and John M. Sesler. Censuses show that the family she listed was of John M. and Nancy Sesler so whether there was really a William Sesler married to "the other" Nancy Sesler in Logan Co., OH, I don't know that either.
- According to the Bible Shari (above) posted, Elmer Y. Sesler's son was J. William Sesler. On the 1860 census he is Willie. On the 1870 OH census, he is John. On the 1880 Kansas census, he is William.
- The Jasper Co., Missouri, 1914 death certificate for William H. Sesler (no J., no John) listed his parents as Elmer Y. Sesler and Anna Whitehill. The informant was E. Sesler of Wamego, KS. It seems E. Sesler would know who his brother was, doesn't it?
- Another telling clue is that William H. "Harry" Sesler of Joplin, MO, had a son named Guy Elwood Sesler. A bit unusual if William H. was not Elmer Y.'s son or some close relation.
So how does the name John fit? Was John a census taker's error in 1870? Was the full name John William H. (Harry)? Since the Seslers were adept at missing censuses, it's really hard to tell much.
Elmer Y. Sesler's mother, Nancy A., was still living in 1880 but that's as far as I know about her. I don't know what happened to all her children listed on the 1850 census except Harriet "Hattie" and Mary were living in in 1870 and Mary married Samuel Epley about 1873.
If you ever solve this puzzle, I hope you will let me know. Good luck!
Ruby
