When the elder James Moniac was born abt. 1815, Alabama was not yet a state, there were a few counties mainly down around the SW corner and around Mobile MS still claimed those counties. The vast majority of AL was settled by the Creek, Cherokee, Choctaw and Chickasaw tribes.
Alabama Territory became in existence in 1817, and became officially a state on Dec. 14, 1819 as the 22nd state. But the floodgates really opened in 1817.
If your Moniac family were in Monroe Co. at it's beginning, then they were in MS. as the MS Territory, Gov. David Holmes created Monroe Co. on June 29, 1815, which basically took all the Creek land which was ceded in 1814 (Treaty of Ford Jackson.)So, technically, James Moniac would have been born in MS Territory, not AL.Makes a big difference when doing genealogy as some records may be in the state of MS and not AL.Monroe Co. covered a vast area of land, and in a short period of time this county was was divided to make Montgomery Co. in 1816 and more was cut to make Conecuh Co. in 1818.More was chopped away in the next few years to make even more counties to finally what Monroe Co. is today, a much smaller county than it's beginning.
Most of that area down there was known for their pines.Nice flatlands, just perfect for growing those huge pines of Alabama and S. GA.
