Re: Henley in Arden
Thank you for responding to my post!
I have some documents that can fill in some information on this couple.
I have seen one or two references to Agar "Maud" in the census, but they are not correct. She was Agar Maria Adams (pronounced "Mariah"according to my grandmother, as in "Mariah Carey"), Daughter of Benjamin Adams and Juliana Bailes (or Bayless) of Birmingham.Agar Maria was baptised in St. Philip Birmingham on January 1, 1830.Agar and Nathan married 30 June 1850 in the District of Harborne, Kings Norton, I think in St. Philip Church (the Victorian handwriting is hard to decipher).
The Shakespeare name appears to end with them, as I believe they had all daughters:Emma Agar (1860), Alice Eliza (1863, my great-grandmother), Kate Violet (1865) and Rose Caroline (1869).There may be some older children who are not listed in the 1881 census.Nathan died in 1895 but Agar is still listed in the 1901 census as a Boarding House Operator in Birmingham. My grandmother was just a girl, but she remembered her "Granny Shakespeare" rather well.
I hope this information is of some value to others. It is mostly from birth and marriage certificates, with a little bit from the census, IGI and Look-up sites.
