The name Shambeau comes from Archambault.
I know that a Joseph Archambault m. to Marie Tellier dit Lafortune moved from the province of Quebec (Canada) to Green Bay Wisconsin, then to Two Rivers Wisconsin (circa 1850) and shortened is name to Shambeau. They had 11 children and their descendants today are found all around the USA.
In the middle of the 19th century, numerous French-Canadian immigrated to the U.S., many of them having the patronym Archambault. Some kept the name intact, others shortened it in a way or another.
All the Archambault of America (Shambeau, Chambeau, Shambo, etc.) have a common ancestor (Jacques Archambault) who came to Canada circa 1629 from Dompierre-sur-Mer, near LaRochelle (France). He was one of the first settlers of New France after the foundation of Quebec City by Samuel de Champlain in 1608. He came to New-France with is wife and six children. One of their major responsibility was to populate New-France. They obviously contributed a lot to that cause because the Archambault, Archambeault, Shambo, Chambeau, Shambeau, etc. are spread all over North America.
