my grandfather wrote a family history in 1939 entitled "The Shannon Family of North Carolina".my ggggrandfather James Shannon (1748-1825)of Gaston (formerly Lincoln) Co.,NC had a daughter Esther who "married Andy Floyd, Feb. 9, 1828, and had the following children:William, Hugh and Lee Floyd. The former was a 1st Lt. in the confederate army."The pioneer ancestor was Hugh Shannon (?-1783) who moved to present day Gaston Co., NC (formerly Lincoln Co., formerly Tryon Co.)by purchasing 600 acres on the Catawba River on Nov. 24, 1763.Tradition has it that he emigrated from the Mercersburg Co., PA area but we cannot pin down which Hugh Shannon he is and his family line in PA and before. We think he is definitely related to the William Shannon and Hugh Shannon of Sadsbury Twp, Lancaster Co., PA of the 1730s-40s.Most of this Shannon family stayed in the Gaston Co., NC area but my grandfather a Presbyterian minister in VA.Any help on linking Hugh Shannon back to PA would be appreciated.Gene Shannon.
