SHAPLAND - SHOPLAND
From various sources of information that I have obtained, it appears that the Surname SHOPLAND is derived from the name SHAPLAND the changes mainly occuring in the mid 1700s.
The name first appears in the Parish Registers for North Molton in Devon UK, and I can personally trace a direct link back to c 1500.
In its turn the name SHAPLAND is probably derived from the name SHOPLAND (OE "An island with a shed - treasury") a parish in Essex, between Rochford & Southend. There is evidence to suggest that the name was given to a man who came from that area. As both SHOPLAND & NORTH MOLTON were lands owned by Baldwin & Count Eustace, it is noticeable that ROBERT DE SHOPILANDE was a juror at North MOLTON in 1238 (see the Devon Eyre of 1238).
Whatever the cicumstances, I have a lot of information, but also require a lot more on various SHOPLANDS & SHAPLANDS.
If you can either help me, or wish me to help you, please contact.
