SHARROCK NAME ORIGINS.

By John Sharrock December 04, 1999 at 11:18:08

I am lead to believe that the name Sharrock is a local name which was adopted in medieval England. The name is English and indicates a person or family from Shorrock Green in Lancashire. The name itself derives from old English which simply means Split Rock.
I was told that a notable was Robert Sharrock who in the 17th Century was a church dignatory and a writer on morality. I was also told that the name can be found in English documents as far back as 1332, but I have no other information on this.

Two family mottos are known - Perseverando "By Persevering"
or Ad monter surgent oculos - "Raise your eyes to the mountain." The first is perhaps more credible than the latter.

Burkes Peerage (1995) shows no fewer than 1521 Sharrock families throughout the world, (and lists names and addresses). In Britain there are 1065 listed, second is USA with 559 listed followed by Autralia with 400 listed.
