Nice to see the old contributors are back!. I go with Phil on this one.
The extract from Burkes Peerage is as follows.
"The surname Sharrock appears to be locational in origin. Research indicates that it can be associated with the English, meaning "Dweller at the split rock". Although this interpretation is the result of onomastic research, there may be other meanings for the Sharrock family name. Probable variations on the name are Schorrock, Shurrock and Sharrocks."
Another research centre confirm that the name is derived where a man once lived or where he held land. The name is quoted as being derived from Shorrock Green in Lancashire and is derived from an old English term and signifies "Split Rock". Thus the original Sharrock was one who lived at or near Shorrock Green.
Burkes Peerage also identified 5015 living Sharrock families throughout the world in 1995, including a G.M.Sharrock in Armidale 2350. (exact address withheld). 2663 families were in GB, 1230 in USA and 880 in Australia.
I'd love to know the exact location of Shorrock Green. Has anyone got any ideas?.
John Sharrock.
