Re: Watch the spelling...
It gets worse. I have one ancestor who's name was spelled Thomas Sherow on his first marriage certificate, Thomas Sherrow on his second marriage certificate, and Thomas Sharo on the 1880 Census. Among his, and his brothers', descendants the spelling Sharro, Sherer, and Sharo can be found. Of course, my immediate ancestors spell it Sharrow. I also understand that one other spelling has been Charon.
This raises the question: What was their nationality? Sharrow is English, Sherer is German, and Charon is French. I have been told that my Thomas Sherow and his brother John Sherer were illiterate (at least in English)and that their wives had to sign all official documents. The problem might be explained if their wives had been different nationalities. However they were sisters with the last "English" name of Lucas.
