Re: Daniel Shartz, b 1793 Maryland to IN
Wow!! Finally more information on them!!
Daniel Shartz and Catherine Ringer, married in Frederick Co, MD in 1819 would be my ggg-grandparents on my mother's paternal side.
Daniel came to Indiana, 1st to New Harmony, Posey Co, about 1824-1826.They stayed 1 planting season there then moved to Marion County, Lawrence Twp (now Indianapolis). He came from the Zion Lutheran church in Middletown with several other families from there (Easterday/Ostertag, Braun/Brown, Smay/Schmeh, Ringer, Bauer/Bower.One of the first pastors at their new church in Indy (Ebenezer Lutheran) was George Rapp from the Zion church in Maryland.
Daniel's family, Magdalena, and many of the others are buried in the Ebenezer Lutheran cemetery, about 1 mile NE of the current Indiana State Fairgrounds. It is a really rough neighborhood now but it was all farmland at that time.I visited the cemetery last year and found Magdalena's stone! It is still VERY legible, with a large GRANDMOTHER in raised letters across the top of it.In the 1850 Marion County census, she is living with Daniel and Catherine and is listed as being 83 years of age.Her parents were Christoph Stoffel Braun(Brown) and Magdalena Mehn/Main.There are many other Browns buried in the cemetery, including several of her siblings, Ringers and Browns.I just couldn't believe my eyes when I found the whole cemetery just full of these families from so long ago.
Does the letter happen to say where Philip is buried?I have looked at all the transcriptions in Warren, Montgomery Counties in Ohio but never found him. They did live in Warren, Hamilton & Montgomery Co, OH from about 1830 on.A few of them stayed there.I found George's marriage listed on an Ohio state marriage listing webpage, Frances Baer to George Sharts, 8/14/1825 in Warren Co, Ohio.
I found several 1830 & 1840 census listings for them there also.Philip's family was living in Montgomery Co, Miami Twp in 1840 and possibly 1830 in Butler Co, listed as Philip Shots.
Do you happen to have a copy of the letters you mentioned?I would love to have copies of them! No, I don't have any photos of these families!Wish I did!My mother never even knew about them other than that of her grandparents, John Luther Mowrey & Hattie's name on a memorial window in their little Lutheran church in Delaware County.
If you need any of my information, I would be happy to help!
