VA Shasteens that went to OH - Collaboration wanted!
I have been beating on this line for 20 yrs, have tons of info I would be happy to share, and wanted to get back into it after 10 years off or so to see if anything has been updated or found. Am looking for electronic copies of pre 1910 pictures to post on my website for Shasteens and am working on tieing in as many as possible. Have started on the IL and IN Chasteens/Sharteens/Shasteens as many are related to the OH Shasteens, with some related to the TN Shasteens.
Would like to compare notes with anyone interested, and more than willing to swap info, particularly if anyone has thoughts on how to go back from 1790 or so. I am stuck in Amherst Co. VA circa 1790 with James Shatteen bro Jesse Shatteen who left for Kentucky, James "Pedlar" (who I think is the one that went to KY) James "J River" who I believe is the father of the assumed 5 brothers that went to OH (Robert, Edmund, William, John, and James) and James "Buff".
(These "titles" I believe are to differentiate between James living in different physical areas based on the geography of the county) This may be two or three James of that generation, or two plus an older one (maybe James Sharstead that witnessed the 1748 Albemarle sale of 580 acrues or the one that sold 150 to Wm Cabell in Nov 1751). Regardless, logic tells you that one James would not father two, so we have a really paternity mess here. Also have info on an 1812 guardianship in Amherst for James appointment over a Patsey Shasteen (not the exact spelling) involving Robert and James Shasteen and Abner Padgett (Phoebee's dad?). Also have an 1832 filing pertainging to an 1812 sale of 130 A land from James Shastead Sen to John & R.S.Ellis naming Robert, William, Edmund, Francis, and Elizabeth Shastead as Heirs at law of James Shastead dec'd.
Also have some limited research on Franklin Co., VA 1786-1803 tax roles with many variations on the spelling of Shasteen for William who appears to be the father of George, Valentine, Robert, Barnett, Ren, John and Thomas. Variations start with Shasteen (William) in 1786 and go on to include Shashteen, Shatteen, Shatten Shasteen. Franklin Co was formed out of Bedford {from Albermarle and Lundnburg in 1753}, Henry and Patrick in 1785.
Ok, who wants to dig into this with me, or better yet, who has the answer and can put my mind at ease?
Thanks,
Ray Shasteen
