Two things:

The John Shatto (married to Margaret McCall) mentioned in your reply is John W. Shatto (11 Oct 1838 - 11 May 1911), a brother of Caleb Shatto and son of Andrew Shatto and Sarah Ball.

The remark that Sarah Shatto(Carroll??)returns her mother and father as being from Maryland may be an important clue to figuring things out.

The above Sarah Ball, wife of Andrew and mother of Caleb and John W. Shatto, was born in Maryland.In various census reports Caleb himself is returned as having both parents born in Maryland, although in fact only his mother, Sarah Ball, was.

Where was John Carroll, Sarah's husband.He may have died before 1870.Sarah is reported as widowed in 1880.

Perhaps Sarah Shatto Carroll is a sister overlooked by just about everyone
