Dear All:
After the excitement of possibly finding a marriage record in France for Jean Nicholas Chateau, a.k.a. Johann Nicol Schatto, and his wife Marie of Lettweiller, Germany, I regret having to say that the record did not pan out. Nice try but no cigar ... or brass ring!! :-) :-(
First, the record is not a Protestant one. It is part of the records of the Catholic parish of Picherande, Departement Puy-de-Dome, Auvergne,France.
Secondly, it is definitely a Catholic record evidenced by the language used.
Thirdly, the surname of the groom is not Chateau but Chabaud - lot's of Chabauds on Ancestry.com trees and other records.
Here is the full translation (a bit loose in places) by a friend of mine whose specialty is French history of this period and has worked with the archives in Clermont-Ferrand where this record is archived.
*TRANSLATION OF A MARRIAGE RECORD THOUGHT TO BE FOR JEAN CHATEAU AND MARIE MAZEYRAT OF 1695 IN THE PARISH OF PICHERANDE, DEPARTEMENT PUY-DE-DOME, AUVERGNE FRANCE.*

p. 118
Determined not to be the marriage record for Jean/Johann Nicholas/Nicol Chateau/Schatto and wife Marie Unknown, Huguenots found in Lettweiller,Rhineland-Pfalz, Germany. The grooms name is definitely Chabaud and furthermore there are baptismal records for their children further on in the parish record and these names do not match the said Huguenot couple's known children.
The below marriage record is in a file of parish records copied and sent to the authorities in Clermont for the Catholic Parish Church in Picherande for the year 1695, as per regulations and authorities printed on the top of p. 116
"After making three announcements at the sermon during Mass of the parish the three days of Sunday last and not having been notified of any legitimate objections from my side of things and of the side of the cure of Besse as you can see by his certificate between Jehan Chabaud merchant resident of the town of Pealat parish of said Besse on one side and on the other side Marie Mazeyrat daughter of (indecipherable)Francois and (indec.) Defarges of the place of Gayme in this parish the marriage has been celebrated between them by words by me in the presence of Louis Lachere who doesn't know how to sign and Aloie Mazeyrat the
parties have also signed with me the twenty fifth of the month of July Sixteen Ninety-Five.Signed Chabaud m Mazeyrat and Sabatier cure."
[Note:Translation of the written record is difficult as abbreviations in places were used and also peoples' names not easily decipherable given the handwriting. This is definitely a Catholic record as the words "Mass" andd "parish" ,"cure" for a priest, are used that were not used by Protestants.]
The personal name of "Jehan" is an archaic spelling of Jean = John in English, Johann in German.
"marchand" or merchant could mean anything from a peddler to a small shop owner.
Pealat is a small village close to modern Besse-et-Saint Anastaise that was merged administratively with Besse-en-Chandesse (1961-1973), the parish simply known as Besse previously.
Gayme appears to have been on the outskirts of Picherande. The name survives in modern times with a small lake just to the outside of Picherande.
Back to square one ....
Best, Barry
