I am a member of the Sheidow family trying to research the family history. The name Sheidow appears to be unique, as everybody with that name is descended from the one family. As far as we can find out, the name first appeared in Ireland in about 1690, and the family legend is that they were Huguenots who fled from France to Ireland to escape persecution - they were Protestants. There are various ideas about where the name came from - Sheideau or Sheidaux, and also that it was originally German. It does not appear in any heraldry lists etc.
Does anybody doing research on the Sheid family know of any Huguenot connections, or that the name was changed to anything like Sheidow?Or know anything at all that could help us??
We have traced some of the family who went to Canada, and some to Australia, but cannot find any trace of any currently in Ireland.
I am Australian, and find trying to get information from Ireland quite difficult.Any ideas on the origin of the name would be much appreciated.
