The Shelhorse/Shellhorse/Schelhorse/Shellhouse families all began as Schelhase; this is how the name is spelled in Lutheran Church records in Cassel, Germany. Johann Bernhard Schelhase arrive at New York with his brothers Peter and Martin on August 12, 1776. They were privates in Co. 2 of the ErbPrinz Regt Hessen-Cassel. They took part in the battles of Brooklyn, Staten Island, and White Plains. In March of 1781 they were sent to Portsmouth, VA and in October they were at Yorktown. Martin was killed in action. Peter and Bernhart were sent to Frederick Prison in Maryland. When the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1783, they were ordered to walk to New York to catch a ship home to Germany. Both brothers decided not to leave America. Peter Americanized his name to Shellhouse and Bernhard changed his name to John Barnett Shelhorse. If you would like more details regarding our German ancestors or the decendents of Barnett, let me know.
Regards,
Max Shelhorse
