Brice Shepherd and Elizabeth Crager
I'm researching Lucretia "Creasy" Shepherd who married Riley Prater. I've been finding some conflicting and confusing things on others family trees and from the Magoffin County Historical Society newsletter. I am hoping someone can clarify the information for me.
Some people say Creasy's parents were Brice Shepherd and Rebecca Bradley. Some list Elizabeth's last name as Bradley.
This is what I have: In 1840 Floyd Census, I've found Brice Shepherd listed next to Jonathan Shepherd. However, Brice has no children in his household. I don't know if this is the right Brice or not.
In 1850 Floyd census, I have: Brice Shepherd age 33, Elizabeth age 28, Cresa age 12, Florinda age 11, Mary age 10, Susan age 9, Brice age 5, Andrew age 3, and Amanda age 1.
In 1860 Magoffin census, I have: Bryce age 44, Elizabeth age 38, Susanah age 18, Bryce age 14, Manda age 10, Albert age 6, Rose Anna age 4, John W age 1, Wilson age 1, and Cyntha age 1.
In 1870 Magoffin census, I have: Brice Shepherd age 53, Elizabeth age 50, Amanda J age 20, Alford age 16, Rosanna age 13, John age 11, Wilson age 11, Cyntha age 11, Joseph age 9, Eliza age 7, and Adam Crager age 47.
In 1880 Magoffin, I have: Bryce Shepherd age 63, Elizabeth age 60, Wilson age 21, John age 21, Joseph age 19, and Eliza A age 17.
I haven't found them in 1900 census.
Birth records found for Cynthia, John, Wilson, Albert, Rosanna, and Joseph establish Elizabeth's last name as Crager.
I haven't found a marriage record for Brice and Elizabeth. Questions I have: Where did the name Rebecca Bradley come from? Are Cresa and Florinda Brice and Elizabeth's birth children or did they "take them in" after someone died? Why weren't they in the 1840 census with them if they are birth children?
I would appreciate any insights.
