Hi Helen
Your family was obviously a military family so they will have moved about a lot and won'y necessarily have a 'home' area of the UK.
But I just did a search on the FamilySearch 1881 Census and your John George William James Sheward shows up bright and strong! This is the direct link to the page:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/census/household_record.asp?HOUSEHOLD_CODE=1881BR_87826&HOUSEHOLD_SUB=1&frompage=5http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/census/household_record.asp?HOUSEHOLD_CODE=1881BR_87826&HOUSEHOLD_SUB=1&frompage=5 (copy everything as one long line into your browser).
Basically he was born in Malta. In 1881 he was 12, and living at the Royal Military Asylum, Kings Road, Cheltenham Terrace, London. The census reference is RG11 Piece 79, Folio 91 Page 8. The Family History Library Film no. is 1341018 if you can get to one of their search rooms and want to find out more.
Hope that helps - I'll let you know if I find him anywhere else.
Best wishes,
Colin
