Re: SHIELDS in Nelson Co. KY c1790
Like you, I'm trying to sort various Shields. With repeating names, changing county names, and new states emerging, it's hard to figure out who's who. This is a direct copy from the Genealogy Library:"Nelson County, Book A, 1784-1807.Baird, Thomas.Dec. 13, 1790.Dec. 1791.To brother James, To brother John Shields.William Wilson.Ex. James Baird, Brian Neel.Wit. John Shields, James Shields."Another positive Baird/Shields reference is from the archives at the Virginia Historical Society.I can't explain the name spelling differences, but Baird and Beard seem to be the same. When I was checking out my husband's great-great grandfather, John Camden Shields, there were two letters filed under his name. They both had been donated by a Virginia Baird of Buena Vista, Virginia. One was from the Civil War and had been addressed to : "Lieut. J.T.S. Beard, Camp Lee, Richmond, VA in care of Lt. Col. John C. Shields."John Camden Shields was commandant of Camp Lee.Someone after the fact had written on the accession: "Col. John Shields nephew with Howitzer outfit."The other letter Virginia Baird had donated was addressed to: "Mr. William S. Beard, Parnassous[not sure if that is the spelling as I try to decipher the handwriting], Augusta."Augusta County neighbors Nelson and Rockbridge counties in Virginia. This letter too has been identified as: "nephew of Col. J.C. Shields."The bottom line comes from the will--how on earth were Thomas Baird and John Shields brothers?
