Are you a direct descendant of James Shirley?
We are trying to prove or disprove the paternity of a man named Rosier Shirley, who would change his last name to Wingate. His supposed father, James Shirley had an affair with Mrs. Temperence Hudson Wingate, his housekeeper, while his wife Winnifred Johnston was away caring for ill relatives. When the wife returned, Temperence had Mr. Shirley's child, Rosier, and he forced his wife to raise the boy.
For many years, our family had heard these stories of Rosier's paternity, and are trying to solve the mystery, but there is one more. We also have no documentation for the supposed husband of Mrs. Temperence Hudson Wingate. We have heard that his name was John Wingate and that suppodedly Mr. Wingate died prior to the birth of Rosier in 1830. We do not know this for certain that she was a widow or even married. None of these stories have been proven, because there is no paper trail.
Not only will we be testing a direct Shirley heir, but we also need a direct Wingate heir for each one of her children as we want to prove or disprove, whether James Shirley fathered her offspring.
James Shirley and Temperence Hudson Wingate would have been born in the late 1700s, and they both left Darlington, SC in the 1840s for Alabama and Georgia. The Shirleys moved to Alabama and the Wingates moved to Georgia. James Shirley married at least once more, maybe twice. And one of those women was a Tempy (Temperence) Keel, not to be confused with my Temperence Hudson Wingate.
