This morning searching the rootsweb archives I found the following : 1827 Georgia land Lottery "Reprint of Official Register of Land Lottery of Georgia" by Miss Martha Lou Houston:
Isom Shirling Sr. R.S. (dont' know what the R.S. is?)
Residence :Putnam County, section 2, Dist. 21, lot no. 40
Capt. Division: Allums
County of Draw: Muscogee County
I also found reference to his estate at: www.corridor.net/bartee_news/V2No2.htm.... Abstract Justice Inferior Court Records (Stewart County) page 571, #100
"Estate of Isham W. SHIRLING
Date: Nov. 1836
Residence: 33 Dist.
Adm: Peyton REYNOLDS
Appr: James WEBB, Jacob CRAVEY, John R. BARTEE, Samuel JOHNSTON, J.P.
Buyers at Sale:
C.S. BALDWIN, John R. BARTEE, Richard CHESHIRE, Gideon H. CROXTON, Charles and Larkin GUNN, Levi HAM, Benj. HART, Benj. HEARST, Peter LUNN, Arthur MANNING, Philip MATHISON, John Jr. and Sr., William B., John A., and Mary SHIRLING, H. TALEY., John UPTON, William WEBB, Wm. WILLIAMS, J.L. WILSON."
This is interesting!Out of curiousity, I checked the 1790 Census of Northampton County, NC where Boykin Bennett ODOM's father Winborne ODOM was born...In Halifax District the following families were all neighbors:
BOYKIN, BENNETT, WINBORNE, and ODOM!!!!!!
Winborne apparently left no Will in Putnam County so I've written a letter to the Probate Court and hope to find his estate records, probate records, annnuel returns etc.I also was finally able to take a look at the 1850 GA Slave Schedule and found that B.B. (Boykin Bennett) ODOM had 37 slaves in Putnam County that year. He was listed in 1860 Slave Schedule as well but no total of slaves mentioned but it was only an index.
Do you know if minor children would be mentioned in a probate or estate record that would mention that the child upon turning the 18 etc. is to recieve this or that?I'm betting that Winborne's slaves or part of, went to wife Mary until B.B. was of age.....Marypassed away in 1874 after emancipation, and left no Will in Putnam County, BUT I will check STEWART County to see if she might of had one written up in that county long before she died and moved back to Putnam County where she is buried.
