Hi Diane;
I, too, am a descendant of a Canadian Shoebridge. My ggg-grandparents are Richard Shoebridge and Eliza McCauley who were married in St. John NB 24 Dec 1831. It looks as though my Richard may have been the first Shoebridge immigrant to Canada.
All the information I have collected on my Shoebridge ancestors is posted on my web site at
home.comcast.net/~earlsmith1424/Shoebridge.html
Most of my links are circumstantial because census records for New Brunswick are almost nonexistent for 1851 and 1861 and I have found very little Shoebridge data in early church records.
My Richard was born in England around 1808-12 (based on his marriage date) and came over with a sister or cousin Hannah Shoebridge (Richard was a witness at her marriage). I have noted that your Thomas Shoebridge had an older brother named Richard b. 1806 and, since relatives often migrate to the same general region, I have often thought that my Richard might be the older brother of your Thomas Shoebridge.
Since you seem to have quite a lot of information on Shoebridge families in Kent, I am wondering if you can shed any light on the origin of my Richard Shoebridge. Do you know anything about the older brother of your Thomas ? Do you know if he may have married a Martha Catt in Kent ? Even if he did, he could still be my Richard because Martha might have died, leaving Richard to marry my Eliza McCauley.
According to the IGI there was a Hannah Shoebridge born 15 Dec 1805 to James Shoebridge and Susanna Relph in Kent, and this Hannah had a younger brother named Richard b. 9 Aug 1812. I have chased my Hannah Shoebridge through US census records, following her marriage to John Mitchell, in the hope of finding a death certificate that would give me the names of her parents. Unfortunately she died in Wisconsin and her death certificate seems to be missing. Do you have any information on the family of James Shoebridge and Susanna Relph in Kent ?
I am also curious to know how you were able to pinpoint the immigration date of your Thomas Shoebridge and Mary Ann Sorrell, and how you knew that they sailed with Alfred Mills and Eliza Shoebridge. I have not found any Shoebridge families in the ship records at the Provincial Archives in New Brunswick. Are there some ship records that I have missed ?
If you can give me any data on my Shoebridge ancestors I would be very grateful.
Earl
