John, Samuel and William Shurmur, NY and GrB circa 1730
Samuel Shurmur (born in Great Britian), a NY merchant (made Burger on Nov. 26, 1726). May have been in business with John Cazalet. Married John's sister, Catherine Cazalet, about 1733. Samuel and Catherine had a daughter named Mary, b. 1735. Samuel's will was proved July 29, 1736. He named his brother, John (born in Great Britian, but living in NY at the time Samuel's will was made)married Catharina MacDonald in the Dutch Reform Church in New York on Sept. 28, 1736. he was made a Burger on Oct. 12, 1726. He died after 1742. Another brother mentioned in the Samuel's will was William, a clothier in England.
After Samuel's death, Catherine, married John Eason, a merchant and privateer during King George's War (1734-47). John Eason died during a navel battle with the French in the eastern Caribbean in 1747. He was the captain of the Pollux. A sister ship, the Castor, was captained by Adrian Man. Eason left everything to Mary Shurmur in his will. The executors were John and Isaac Man. Ann Man of Bergen, NJ, was a witness when the will was proofed.
Mary Shurmur married Baron Frederick Von Weissenfels, a Colonel of the New York Levies (irregular troops) during the Revolution. His correspondance with George Washington still exists. Frrederick and Mary children were George and Charles Frederick Weissenfels. They both served in the Continental Army.
If anyone can connect this to their Shurmurs, Shurmers, Easons, Mans, Weissenfels, I'd sure like to hear from them.
