Search for details on Silvia Family-New Bedford MA
I am looking to fill in some gaps in my knowledge of my family history. I know that Joao (John) C. Silvia Sr. came from the Azores very early in 1900's or possibly the late 1890's. He and my grandmother lived on Circuit street in New Bedford for many years. My Grandmother was called Zumira(sp?) Jeorge before her marriage to my Grandfather. Grandpa Silvia was from the island of St. Michael, in the village of Achadinha where my Grandmother was from the Island of Pique in the village of Magdelena. Both came through Ellis Island but were married in New Bedford. The both worked the knitting mills in New Bedford throughout the war and Grandpa Silvia finally retired as a city worker for the City of New Bedford. Family rumor has it that Grandpa was the son of a doctor that used to visit the Azores from Lisbon and the house keeper who was his mom. The name his mom arrived in this country with was apparently Furtado but Grandpa Silvia was apparently so angry with the Doctror for packing him and his mom off to the Americas that he kepthis mother's madien name. although both my dad and his older sister are still alive the details are getting a bit hard to get accurately as time goes on. I am writing a book for my son to detail his linage and would like to be as accurate as possible. Anybody out there have access to public records and archives in New Bedford Ma or the Azores????
