Re: John Leotis Simmons born 4 Jan 1870 Ind
I saw your message and the replies to it. This seems to be John Leotis, called Otis, Simmons of my husbands family. We have bible info for all his family, but no mention of a marriage before the one with Minor Belle Powell circa 1894 Ozark AK. He married her, had the two girls, and just after 1900 went to OK. He worked for the RR and was killed near McAlistar in 1902. His wife remarried twice before she died.
The family was from the Chattonooga/North GA area, and moved to Noblesville Ind after the civil war. Regardless of what the 1870 census says, John LeOtis was the only one born in IN. The others were born in either TN or GA, with the exception of the father, Jordan, who was born in NC. The mother, Phoebe, and the maternal grandmother Luvinia died in 1872, and 74. The family went to Summitville Ind, then all but the oldest son Jerry removed to Ozark Ak. The eldest daughter Sarah L had married a Smith in GA and had not gone to IN with the family. She went to Ozark with her husbands family. Two of the other daughters had married in IN, but they with their families went to AK also. In 1889 the daughter Malinda, whose husband had died, returned to IN with her three children. Perhaps John Leotis went with her. Their father had remarried by then....three times. His sisters had all married also. One of the older sisters also returned to IN, sometime in the nineties. I hope this helps.
