By William Archerd September 16, 2009 at 02:47:43

Sighting of Lewis Simmons in 1780:

"Ordered Thomas Freeland be appointed Overseer of Road on W. side of Haw River & following hands to work under him, to wit, John Grant, William Rainey, Ben Rainey, Christopher Holt, Thomas Smith, Michael Holt, William Davis, James Freeland, Conrod Long, Wm. Galbreath, John Hurrman, Edward Huske, Jos. Reeves, Wm. Oniel, Henry Server, Lewis Simmons, Edward Grant, Michael Rillion?." [Source: 43-86 1/2. Court of February 1780, on p. 46 of "Abstracts of the Minutes of the Inferior Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions of Orange County, N.C. 1777-1788, abstracted and edited by Alma Cheek Redden, 1966.]

There was a road crew appointed at the same court session for the E. Side of Haw River and it included Wm. Craig.

Sighting of Lewis Simmons in 1781:

Book A, p. 279 Orange County Will Abstracts - Will of Edward Gant (sic, Grant?) dated 13 August 1781, proved August 1783; wife Elizabeth; sons and daughters etc and "land adjoining Luis Simmons".
[Source: "Abstracts of Wills recorded in Orange County, N.C., 1752-1800, by by Ruth Herndon Shields.] This book also abstracts the Will of William Craige from Book A, page 329. The Will was dated January 11, 1785 and the abstract has already appeared in this forum. William Craig's will identified five daughters, included Ruth Simmons and Joanna McMullin.

A Ruth Simmons and a John Simmons were witnesses at the 1763 wedding at Warrington MM in Warrington Township, York County, Pennsylvania of Joanna Craige and William Griffith. Joanna Craige was married a second time, to John McMillan on May 11, 1784 at the same Warrington MM. One of the witnesses as the 1784 marriage was Ruth Griffith, who appears to be Joanna's daughter by her first marriage. Ruth is probably named after Ruth Simmons, and Ruth Simmons must have been Ruth Craige before she married John Simmons.

Could Lewis Simmons be a son of John and Ruth Simmons?

At ysearch.org, there is a ydna report with the Code CV74C. The genealogy associated with this Code starts with Lewis Simmons and his wife Polly. Lewis is shown as being born in North Carolina and Polly as being born in 1772 in Davidson County, Tennessee. Their son Lewis Simmons is shown as being born March 21, 1801 and dying in 1864 in Piney Township, Texas County, MO; his wife is shown as Sally Willis.

Is the Lewis Simmons of the 1780 road crew and the 1781 Will reference the same Lewis who married Polly?
