Here is an excerpt from my electronic book. I do not follow the Thurmands down.
Many researchers have asssigned Joseph below as a son of Arthur & Rachel Slayden of New Kent>Goochland co VA, but I do suspect he is a grandson. Cannot control the formatting on this board so it may look odd.

Children from conjectures and records analysed by Brown, James Barrow (deed for land after decease of Benjamin 70-l shows his estate divided twelve ways; Mr Brown assumes eleven heirs plus widow. We know, however, that grandchildren may be heirs as well if the parents are dead). Information supplied to me byJOM. No records have been shown to me that prove that Julie’s ancestor Abner Wilson Slayden ( 3rd section) is a son of Benjamin 70-l. Nor have records that show Coleman as a son of Benjamin 70-l. However, Benjamin 70-L's marriage to Polly is witnessed by Abner Pistole. Benjamin 70-L is bondsman of marriage between Abner Pistole and Sarah Tisdale, July 25, 1825.
Supplement to Maury County, page 269: [S E Witherspoon] mar Mary L, dau of W H and Winnie (Slayden) Johnson.
Clearly the Johnsons and Trues intermarried: Martha Johnson, wife of Joseph E 70-L-3, is the sister of Henry Johnson who married Winnifred 70-L-7, and the of Matthew Johnson who married Desdemona True. Another researcher referred to "books about the Johnsons and Trues" in a library in Texas, which have never been found in subsequent searches, as a basis for reporting that Abner Wilson was the son of Benjamin. Researcher says "kept no copies, but was satisfied that this question was answered." Descendants are not satisfied with this shoddy approach to proofs.
Later Maury county citations make it clear that there were marriage connections between the Slaydens, Piggs, Fitzgeralds, and Thurmans/Thurmonds. Unfortunately these citations use initials rather than full names, are undated, and do not indicate gender. In one such citation: “[Fitzgerald: ] A W married John Slayden and E B married L E Slayden.” Later citations show “A W and Jean (Slayden) Fitzgerald.”
Unclear of this John Caldwell is the man in Daniel 2's neighborhood:
Pittsylvania co VA Court Record Book 16, page 335 – August Court 1814 - Benjamin Slayton having paid to the Clerk of this court the sum of six dollars and fifty three cents the tax and interest on 2/32 of 291 acres of land charged to John Caldwell and returned delinquent for the non payment of the taxes thereon for the years 1790, 1801, 1802, 1803, 1804, 1805, 1806 & 1807…it is ordered that the said Slayden be reimbursed accordingly…

Second marriage: record for Benjamin 70-l and Eliza C Smithson on Mar 20, 1837 in Williamson co TN.
Eliza later married John Trotter, Dec 6, 1846, and later yet to a Mr Walker. She lived in Giles co TN in the household of Ben Jr 048-i. She died in Pocahontas TN, Jul 28, 1892.
WJS of MO states that recordsin Maury co TN deed books show that Coleman Slayden is an heir to Benjamin 70-l, but I have not seen the records, no has JS produced copies. Coleman appears to have named a son Joseph Everett.Men with these names settled in Jackson co AR, and were extensively tracked byT D Boaz of VA. Mr Boaz shows Coleman marryingElizabeth Briggsin 1834 Hickman co KY, but I have not seen this record. However, the MO record I found for Joseph E mentioned above, is clearly Joseph E 70-L-3.
It is important to distinguish the AR Joseph E from the MO Joseph E.
Here is an excerpted version of James Barrett Brown Jr’s analysis of these records, dated April 1973, to Joyce Coffee Hudgins, who in turn supplied this to Julia O Mitchel, then of Lincolnshire IL, now of Lexington KY. Some repetitions of marrriage dates and records seen above deleted:
Dear Mrs Hudgins,
I have done a considerable amount of work on the Slayden family…I spent a considerable amount of time and money on this line. I made one trip to Virginia…For $50.00 I will send you a report on the family. It will include your line traced back to about 1740, your Revolutionary Ancestor, and all references for each generation…
[I guess she bit, because this analysis is attached:]
Benjamin Slayden lived in Pittsylvania Co VA and Maury Co TN.
Benjamin Slayden was the son of Joseph Slayden who died in Pittsylvania co VA [will dated March 18 1819]. I could not find the maiden name of Joseph Slayden’s wife. Some believe she was an Everett.
Benjamin Slayton is listed in page 708 of the 1820 census of Pittsylvania co VA. By 1830 Benjamin Slyden had moved to Maury Co TN…listed on page 381 of the 1830 Maury Co TN census…4 males and 8 females in the household.
[Maury Co TN] Deed Book 1M-page 45 Benjamin Slayden bouth 131 acres of land from Samuel Neely, Registered 7 July 1826 [note that there is no distinction made here between registration and deed, so should we presume it is the same day?-CS]
Benjamin Slayden [first] married Polly Pistole in Pittsylvania co VA…dated 18 Dec 1809 and were signed by her father Charles Pistole [who] also came to Maury co TN…listed in page 414 [between 70-80]. Daniel E Slayden [70-d]was a brother to Benjamin [and] was my ancestor. He [was in Maury] by 1819 [and] moved to Dickson Co TN around 1840 where his first cousin Thomas Slayden Thomas 2-a-1was living [my records show him in 1850 Gibson but not in 1840 Dickson-CS]. Thomas had married Rachel Slayden a sister to Benjamin and Daniel E Slayden.
Benjamin Slayden married [second] Eliza C Smithson – Williamson Co [TN] Marriage Records 1800-1850 page 241 [CS has copy of original] Date March 2, 1837.
After the death of Benjamin Slayden Eliza C married John Trotter in 1846. Benjamin Slayden had several children but since he did not leave a will I was only able to prove the names of some of them.

[Maury Co TN] Minute Book 15 –1845-1849, page 107 Ishmael Stevens appointed guardian of Mary, Benjamin and Henrietta Slayden, minor heirs of Benjamin Slayden deceased. [no date in Mr Brown’s report]
[Excerpted will of Joseph Slayden, Pittsylvania co Va and citation from Gwathmey that he was in the First Light VA Dragoons, the “Revolutionary Ancestor” ]
[Excerpted will of Arthur Slayden, Goochland co VA]
The above mentioned Arthur is Joseph Slayden’s father. Arthur Slayden is first mentioned in the St Peter’s Parish Vestry New Kent Co VA [where several of his children’s births are recorded]…Joseph’s birth is not recorded in the Vestry Book but must have been about 1740. Arthur Slayden moved from New Kent Co to Goochland Co VA [where he died.]
***end of Mr Brown’s report
Clearly Joseph Everett Slayden70-L-3and Ben Jr 70-L-9 are the most traceable of this line. In 1871 Giles co TN, Ben Slayden’s name (among many others) came up in a divorce case involving a woman Louisa who married a William Hill, Hill had previously married Lousia’s aunt. The nature of his involvement is not known to me because I have not yet read the testimony.
Benjamin Sr's widow, Eliza , later married John Trotter, then a man named Walker.
Slayton Benjamin 1820 Cen Pittsylvania (062) VA (code to be rechecked)
Clearly moved to TN shortly after 1819 death of his father Joseph 70. Brother William E 70-eappears to have pioneered TN (VA 1813 – TN 1817) ahead of Daniel E 70-d (1823) and Benjamin 70-L,but there may be earlier documents for these men in TN that have not come under my nose, and there were several Daniels in VA.

ORIG - TRANS
(Estate settlement of Benjamin Sr divided eleven portions besides wife, so looks correct, with one child predeceasing father. However, as shown below, all later records for William H and Benjamin (Jr) consistently report post1830 birth dates. Pretty confusing, huh?) One son could possibly be Abner Wilson Slayden/Slaton, b 1815 VA, ancestor of JOM of KY/IL. John Slayton reports so, along with a Coleman Slayden who settled in Arkansas. This would not leave room for William Henry is that is so.
1842-1843 Estate settlement (beautifully hand-written and clear):
total 788.27 ¼ Dec 7 & 8 1842
Eliza E Slayden $47.06 ¼ - daughter? Widow?
Eliza E Slayden $134.75 – daughter? Widow?
Euel Miller $10.57 – son-in-law
Aron Vestal $4.68 ¾ - man appointed by Ben Jr as guardian while Ben Jr was in Lauderdale co AL
Joseph E Slayden – 4.68 ½ - son
Martha & Lucretia (together, daughters, and individually)
Many TRUES and FORGEYS among the estate settlement.
18 slaves, among hirees:
Coleman – relationship unclear
John Latta – son-in-law
Joseph E Slayden – son
Note against C M Slayden (Coleman?)
Note for Abner Pistole against Benjamin ("Desparate Claim")
