I have located my ancestor, Hiram Sloop and his family in Ohio. I sent for the Civil War Pension record for his son and found that Hiram Sr. had apparently had a history of mental illness and ultimately killed himself. His wife, Ann Marie and one daughter, Emma then moved to California to live with an older daughter, Marie and son-in-law, William L.L.Pierce. I am still trying to learn the identity of Hiram's parents. The Civil War Pension record had letters written by Hiram's son mentioning another SLOOP: Jacob H. Sloop, who was in his Unit. I sent for his record, but it doesn't hold any useful genealogical information for my research. From what I have pieced together, Jacob H. was married to Eliza Jane Woodruff. She remarried after his death to Thomas R. Folger. Jacob is also found in the Ohio census and like Hiram, was originally from PA. He was apparently removed from the Wesleyan Cemetery and buried elsewhere. He is next to Fannie H., whom I believe may be a sister. I believe her daughter may have been Lida W. Bart. Because Hiram's son mentions her in his letter I believe there must be a family connection. I just don't know what it is. Hiram was unable to work for most of his life, and his family was extremely poor. He didn't own any property and left no estate, or records for us to ponder over. There are also letters from nephews of Hiram: Benjamin and Jacob S. Lape. I assume from this that Hiram had a sister. The letters do make reference to a Grandmother Betsey??. Hiram was born in Philadelphia, PA c. 1806.I am interested in the families of Andrew & Charles Sloop who appear in the PA 1820 census for possible family connections. Several Sloops appear in the Ohio census at the same time as Hiram: Jacob, Solomon, and Sarah. Johan Conrad Schlupp is described as an early PA German Pioneer, coming in 1767.Any information on his children or any information on this Sloop family greatly appreciated as I've hit the proverbial brick wall.
