It has been a while since I posted to Gen Forum, one of my favorite searching sites.
I am searching for siblings & parents of Henry L. Smith born @1833 GA.I know he was in the Confederate Army during the whole Civil War and April 26, 1865 he was paroled from being Prisoner of War at Grennsboro, NC where he had been in a hospital part of that time.He was captured and exchanged previously and had gone back to his Unit.
Henry L. Smith then married Elizabeth Howard McDow June 7, 1865 in Selma, Dallas Co., AL.Elizabeth's parents had died not long before the war ended and she and her siblings had fallen on hard times and had been separated after their parents death, some working and some too young to work had been placed with other families.
On the 1870, Many, Sabine Parish Ward 7, LA Census #50 (the names were incomplete or spelled wrong on the Census, they are correct here) Smith, Henry L.37 m. w. Minister 100 GA Smith, Lizzie24 f. w.keeping house AL Smith, Mary Telula4 f. w.LA Smith, Samuel Angel 2 m. w.LA Smith, Anna Rebecca 1 f. w.LA McDow, William Reese 17m.w.works on farm AL McDow, Sarah20 f. w.at home AL
Henry & Lizzie McDow Smith would have Raleigh "Reese" Smith 1873 LA
Sarah "Sally" McDow would marry Charles Aldredge, a neighbor.
Henry L. Smith would be dead by Oct 1876
Both Henry L. Smiths sons also became Ministers and so did William Reese McDow.All became Methodist Ministers and later Samuel A. Smith became a Church of God Minister.
Elizabeth Howard McDow Smith would move her family to Smith & Van Zandt Co., TX.It appears she married a John L. Davis Dec 16, 1876 Many, Sabine Parish, LA and the next day they went to Smith Co., TX and after they arrive in TX, John L. Davis returns to LA.They may have married to be able to travel together without damaging her reputation.Elizabeth taught school until she marred Dr. William Alexander Allen Nov 14, 1880.She would die Feb 22, 1891 in Van Zandt Co., TX.
I know very little about Henry L. Smith.I know he joined the No. Louisana Cadets, as Pvt, Co. A, 12th LA Infantry on Nov 26, 1861 in Columbus, Fayette Co., KY.He must have traveled to join that group because he had friends in there, John Ross Hopkins and his brother, William.John Ross Hopkins (d. Oct 28, 1864 in battle)had married Mary Emily McDow, sister of Elizabeth, before Hanry and Elizabeth married.
I have never located Henry L. Smith on any Census that I am sure of except the one in 1870.
Any help with this Gr. Gr. Grandpa of mine would really be appreciated.
