I wondered if any of you might have a Henry L. Smith b. @1833 GA anywhere in your line.
My Henry L. Smith had served in Co A, 12th Louisiana Infantry (most were recruited from Parishes of DeSoto, Sabine & Natchitoches), LA.Henry L. Smith served from the beginning of the Civil War until the end. At the end of the war he was a prisoner of war & paroled at Greensboro, NC April 26, 1865.
Henry L. Smith married Elizabeth Howard Mc Dow (b. Jan 9, 1845 GA) in Selma, Dallas Co., AL June 7, 1865. Elizabeth had lost her parents during the Civil War and she and her siblings had scattered, the older ones taking work where they could find it and the younger children were with other families.
Henry L. & Elizabeth McDow Smith appears to have taken 2 of her siblings & are next located in the 1870 Census, Sabine Parrish, LA Ward 7 #50
SMITH, Henry L. 37 m. w. Minister (Methodist) 100 GA " Lizzie 24 f. w. keeping house AL " Mary T. (Telula) 4 f. w. LA " Samuel (Angel) 2 m. w. LA (will also be a Minister) " Anne (Anna Rebecca) 1 f. w. LA Mc Dow, William (Reese) 17 m. w. works on farm AL (he later became a Methodist Circuit Minister) Mc Dow Sarah (Sally Frances) 20 f. w. at home (she will marry Charles Washington Aldredge, a neighbor)
Henry & Elizabeth Smith would have another child Raleigh Reese Smith born 1871 and Raleigh will also become a Methodist Minister.
Henry L. Smith was dead by Oct 1876.
I have never located Henry L. Smith on any Census but the one in Sabine Parish, LA 1870 (that I know about).
Henry L. Smith served in the Civil War with two brothers John Ross Hopkins & William T. Hopkins (b. Oct 10, 1841 Lownds Co. AL). John Ross Hopkins (b. Dec 15, 1836 GA) had married Elizabeth McDow's sister, Mary Emily McDow, before the Civil War and they had two sons.
John Ross & William Hopkins were sons of T. J. Hopkins who was in Natchitoches Parish, LA 1850 #478 and I assume Henry L. Smith knew them prior to the Civil War since John Ross Hopkins married Mary Emily McDow prior to the Civil War and MAYBE Henry L. Smith knew Elzabeth Howard McDow prior to the Civil War?
Any help or suggestions on locating parents or siblings of Henry L. Smith would be greatly appreciated.
