Richland and Barnwell County SC Stephen Smiths are NOT the same. SC
There has been much confusion, even in published genealogies, regarding two pre-Revolutionary Stephen Smiths in SC. The Stephen Smith of Barnwell County (formerly Winton), Burke Co. GA, Orangeburg District SC, Silver Bluff, SC Savannah River, Steel Creek and relative of the Hankinsons is NOT the same Stephen Smith as the Stephen Smith of Richland County, formerly Craven County, formerly Camden District, Kershaw District Cedar Creek, Broad River, Between the Broad and Catawba Rivers and at times even Fairfield District SC. Stephen Smith of Richland's home was and remains today near the Richland/Fairfield County line.
The confusion comes because the two were contemporaneous and both were married to women named Mollie. Stephen Smith of Barnwell was married to Mollie Newman. Her brothers, all Newmans, were named in the will of Stephen Smith of Barnwell. Stephen of Barnwell lived on the state line between SC and GA and had land holdings in both states.
There is a well known, but I think still unpublished, manuscript by Evalyn Lever Hedgepath Called The Levers of Cedar Creek and Allied Families . Unfortunately, Mrs. HedgePath also made the Mollie Newman error and it has been picked up by others ever since. Fortunately there doesn't seem to be any errors in the children, grandchildren and later generations. It seems only to be the mention of Mollie's surname in this otherwise VERY helpful genealogy that is incorrect.
We do not know the surname of the wife of Stephen Smith of Richland County. She is simply referred to as Mollie. She is the Mollie Smith who applied for and received a Revolutionary War Pension, the application for which was witnessed by her grandson John Smith.
The children of Stephen and Mollie Newman Smith of Barnwell were Elinor, Stephen Jr., Ann, Henrietta and Sarah.
The Children of Stephen and Mollie Smith of Richland were
Abraham, Stephen Jr., Andrew and Sallie.
