Loren,
Sorry for the delay in responding to your last message.
I am a 64 year old Freshman at The University of Arkansas and I have a problem now with time management. But anyway,
your last message gave me quite a bit of information. Quite by accident you found one of the key people in my mystery. Mame Servis Benjamin. I did not know her middle name was Servis. That is a huge discovery. I am at a disadvantage right now, because I have forgotten what I originally sent you and how much you know about this. Any way, it was Aunt Mame that went to Louisiana in the early 1920's and found something. When she came back she would not tell anyone or talk about it. All the records were magically destroyed in a fire.It was her daughter Helen Lancaster that left $2 miilion dollars in her will. All but $20,000.00 went to her school alma mater. She was a school teacher. It was also after Mame's return to New Jersey that very expensive furniture and silverware started to arrive inHopewell,New Jersey.
Mame or Mary is shown in the Census of 1880 on your page 2.
I am curious about the NJ LA NJ reference. I know that the first is probably her birth place and the third is her death place, what does LA indicate? Marriage? To Whom?
Just before my Uncle Oscar died he told me that there were two women living in a small house on the property of Frank Benjamin. Can that be traced somehow?
Mame was born in 1879
The Lorenzo Servis mentioned was the brother of David Servis. He lived in Louisiana for a while and worked for David who owned several plantations there.
Franks wife Rachel Snook always said that Abe Snook was her half brother. So, George was married before.
We do not know to who.
I also saw a Rachel Snook as being 78 years old with the indication that she was born in Louisiana. That Rachel was not our Rachel, but maybe she was the Mother?
If that is true and she was born in Louisiana, we are either getting close to something or we are getting deeper into confusion.
I have always wondered why Frank Benjamin, who was born in Louisiana was sent to New Jersey? He lived with Catherine Servis Birch and Renseler Birch. Now with the information that he named one of his daughters Mary (which was thought to be his Mothers name) and a middle name of Servis we know that something is connected.
I did not know any of the other Snook family members that you sent me.
I have tried to look at the name Sorbotka many times and I cannot make it out. I did locate a family in Ringgold County,Iowa. An Alma J. Sorbotka married Lester Wiley on 12-28-1904. Interestingly, the Wiley family traces back to John Hart of Hopewell,New Jersey and he was one of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence.
Loren, I think that maybe I should send you what I have. There are many pages, and I could not possibly do it this way. If you would like me to do this, send me your address via regular mail and I will put it together for you.
Well, it's late and I've got an early class.
Roy
