William James Spann was born January 22, 1842 near Tumbleton in Henry County, Alabama.He was the seventh child of John Edward Spann Sr. and Marcilla Odom.The Spann family came to Henry County, Alabama in 1832 from Ridge Spring, South Carolina.
William James Spann served for a short time in the Confederate Army.He and his older brother Dildatha Odom Spann enlisted as privates in Company E, 25th Georgia Volunteer Infantry on August 25, 1862. Both William and Dildatha became sick with camp fever within a month.William was sent home in October 1862 and never returned to active duty.
William James Spann was married twice.
He was married first on November 8, 1862 in Henry County, Alabama to Miss Elizabeth Armstrong.They were the parents of the following children:
