Okay So here's my theory on the Rutherford Spanns.I noted on the 1850 Census that William R. Spann is listed as Insane and Hartwell Spann is listed as blind Hartwell is Just above William R. on the Census. On a later Census for Hartwell I believe it was 1870 I noted he was listed as Insane "DUMB ME" I didn't record that census year so I'll have to find it. Regardless I believe that Hartwell was likely Blind, and mentally handicapped which would explain why he always resided with one of his siblings.
My question is why are there two Hartwell and two William Spanns in Rutherford county both around the same ages how did Rutherford go from one William spann in 1810 & 1820 to two williams and two hartwells in 1830.What are the odds of two siblings of the same names moving to a county with the same named siblings with the same or near same birth dates? Did that make sense? My new Idea is that like a Census I found in Idaho and Utah the census taker for one state took the census into another state without realizing it thus causing certain families to be recorded twice in that case they were recorded in Utah and Idaho because they lived near the border. Could that be what has happened here one city in Rutherford bordered the other and the boundries were unclear so William & Hartwell were recorded twice? If I'm barking up the wrong tree someone let me know.
