I discovered your story of your wifes blood on Spann the other day.The message was posted a few years ago, but the timing was right for me to discover it. I was totally amazed by the story, because your wifes decsendent Rebecca Ann Spann family was the slaveowners of my decsendents. The Mack's. I discovered the connection a few days ago. In the will of Richard Spann of Sumter South Carolina. Richard Spann was the father of Henry and the grandfather of S.Robert who were all the slave owners of my ancestors.Rebecca Ann and her married name Collins was mentioned in the will. Richard Spann had several children. Robert,Charles,Harry,Federic(Rebecca Ann Spann father) ,Martha,Sarah and HENRY. In Richard Spann's will he left several slaves and plantation to his son Henry. One in particular slave was Lewis, Mack. Lewis was my gggg grandfather. Lewis Mack and his family continue to live and work for the Spanns even after slavery. I found Henry Spann and his family and my family living together in 1870 Swimming Pens census records. Henry Spann died in 1873, but still my family lived next to his son S. Robert Spann and his family. I found both the Spann's and Mack's together in the 1880 and the 1900's census records for Swimming Pens. The Mack family even named some of their children after the Spann family. Researchers say's that if you can find your African American ancestors in the 1870 census records living next door to caucassion families of wealth then there is a possibility that the family were slaveowners. They were right. Have Joe Spann finished the Spann book yet? I would love to see if there is any records in the book about the slaves the Spann had or the name of the plantation. Maybe in those recordsI could find out more about my family. The Spann's family roots and family will always be a link to my family and the generations to come. I hope that you see this e-mail sooner than I saw yours.
