Tom, your best bet to connect up to the correct Spencer clan, of the hundreds that exist, is to have a male descendant of your mom's father's line (ie- your mother's brother, or that's brother's son, or your mom's dad's brother or his male descendants who still have the Spencer surname) take the (simple swab inside one's cheek) y-line DNA test.

You can do this simply, and inexpensively, thru the www.shgs.org site. Go to its 1st page, and across top of it are catagories, left to right, about 5th over, it says dna studies, so click on that. It will bring-up a page w/all the info, cost, require-ments. Very simple. And in 3 wks time after sending in your male Spencer dna sample, you will get a report back and it will tell you WHICH Spencer GROUP you allign with. Then from the others IN that group, many often who possess papers of their lineage, you might be able to go back many more generations from what you only know of, now!
