According to Colonial and Revolutionary Families of Pennsylvania, The Lewis Pub. Co., New York, 1911, "The Sprankle (Spengler, Spangler, Sprenckel) family of Pennsylvania trace their ancestry back to George Spangler or Spengler, who was cup-bearer to the Emperor Barbarosa (1150 A.D.)...""The family coat of arms consists of a red shield emblazoned with a silver beaker resting on three golden hills, and surrounded by a Bishop's Bust."
