Like I said Casey, I haven't put time into my Stafford heritage.I certainly haven't read the historical aspects of the Stafford's the way that you have. You know SO MUCH MORE, HISTORICALLY, than I!I'll have to read some of those books that you have been reading when I have a moment.
What I know about Roger is only from a genealogical viewpoint. What you said about the English Crown eradicating the legitimacy of the Stafford progeny is news to me!The English Crown had nothing to do with Roger's problems. The way that I understand it, Roger was not competent to take charge of the wealth and power that the Staffords wielded (yes, stupid, as I understand it). Therefore, they, the Lords of Stafford, kept him locked up and under guard in the castle. It is claimed that he never married or had children. It has been a long time since I first read all of that, so I hope I got it right, as I wouldn't want to pass on any untruths.
Back to Thomas, Samuel, and Amos Stafford. I have never seen any documented evidence (as in church records, or otherwise)concerning them. It is good to know that it exists.
Don't you see it as strange, if Thomas is descended from the Lords of Staffordshire, that none of his sons are named Richard, Humphrey, Edward, Henry, etc.Where in the "heck" did the name Amos come from?I really do have a hard time beliving that Thomas descended from those Staffords. Why would he never mention who his father was. If you were descended from such a noble family wouldn't you want everyone to know how you connected to them?He never even told his wife! He never told his children anything about their illustrious birth right!I find that too strange.
As far as your Stafford ancestry, I think they would come closer to connecting with the noble line than the Thomas Staffords.I have read that Staffords went to Ireland when they left England.
I don't really know about any of it.I know that record-keeping in England was as lax as it was here.None of these countries had any kind of system before 1800s. In England, only Parish records were kept prior to 1800s, and even they weren't kept with any kind of regularity. It is a wonder that it is even possible to trace your lineage back as far as your gr gr grandparents.I know many find it very hard to even get as far as the 1800s in THIS country.
