Re: Stainforth/Thompson from Yorkshire
Since I posted to the forum, an excellent book about Stainforth Family History has been published - the author is Peter Terrick Stainforth (a 3rd cousin of mine. You will find more about Peter's work (and more about the book) on his web site here: www.stainforth-history.co.uk
Some personal research I did recently covered the children of John Stainforth (b.1671, Lord Mayor York in 1730). In addition to Mary (b.1714)he had four children. Elizabeth (b.1720) became housekeeper at The Queen's House. John's son William (b.1710) andWilliam's wife Elizabeth (nee Worsley) were also both in Royal Service.
Working upwards, John Stainforth's parents were Rev William Stainforth (b.1669 Rector of Simonburne) and Frances Prickett. Frances Prickett was daughter of George Prickett (Recorder of York) and Rebecca Thompson (daughter of Leonard Thompson, Alderman of York).
Rev William Stainforth (Simonburne) was the son of Dr William Stainforth DD(b.circa 1645, Canon of York Minster) and Judith Hesketh (a.k.a Judith Thompson).
Dr William Stainforth was the son of John Stainforth (born illegitimate as John Rogers, 1605) and Mary Blakestone. For the complete picture (and for the story of our common ancestors going back to around 1400), you will have to buy the book!
I am descended from a brother of your ancestor Rev William Stainforth (Rector of Simonburne)- yet another William b.1704 who was a wine merchant in York.
Best wishes, John
