Who is this William Stanton? (1660s, 1670s, colonies) - related to Thomas?

By DAVID LORD August 16, 2008 at 11:54:51

There is a William Stanton mentioned in a marriage document in Virginia in 1679.

Who was he?

Whoever he was, the marriage doc says his widow was "Dorothy Lord." It is assumed this Dorothy was a granddaughter of Thomas Lord who was born in 1585 and was one of the founders of Hartford. That Thomas Lord had sons who were known to do business with the Thomas Stanton who came to Virginia in 1634, then later to Hartford where he married Ann Lord (dtr of Thomas) and later settled in Stonington CT (far SE CT).

So it's easy to presume that William Stanton who married Dorothy Lord was somehow related to Thomas Stanton. A brother? Cousin? Nephew?

Whoever William Stanton was, he was most likely born in the 1640s, because he had died by 1679 and his widow remarried in 1679 (in the document cited) and had at least one son thereafter. The next husband of Dorothy (that she married in 1679) was probably born about 1647 more or less, so it's probable (though of course only a guess) that William Stanton would have been about the same age.

Anyone know who this William Stanton is - or have any good guesses?
