John Layton Starkey is in my database. His mother was Sophia Fee, daughter of John Fee, Jr. (1782-23 Nov 1858) and Elizabeth Meek (1793-13 Jan 1858). John Fee, Jr., was the son of John Fee, Sr. (1762-1803) and Ellen Ritchie. Sophia was born in 1831 in Pennsylvania, but her family moved west, first to Adams Co., IL, and then to Missouri. In 1850 her parents and some sibs were living in Lewis Co., MO. Sophia was right across the county line in Clark Co., living with her widowed brother Daniel Fee. Sophia Fee married Hamlin John Starkey 19 Dec 1852 in Lewis Co., MO. In 1860 and 1870 they were living in Lee County, Iowa. I haven't been able to find them in 1880. However, in subsequent census records Sophia and Hamlin were living apart, despite the fact that they had had several children together: John Layton, Caroline, Angeline Isabella, William, Anna Belle, Josephine Elizabeth, Iowa, Ulysses Grant, and George Washington Starkey. I found 18-year-old Hamlin Starkey this morning in the 1850 census of Lee County, Iowa. He was living in a household headed by John Starkey, age 55, and Eliza, age 41? 47? By the way, Sophia's sister Elizabeth Fee married William Henry Starkey. It's likely that he was related to Hamlin, but I have no evidence for that yet.
