Thanks for your note.I believe I descend from this John Steinhoff of NJ and Ontario, Canada. My William J. Steinhoff was born abt. 1830 in Canada: he is the age to be a grandson or great-grandson of John.Wm. J. married Anna Perkins (b. 1833) and had two children, both born in Canada.Wm. J. apparently died by about 1860.His widow moved to the states and remarried in Ill., then moved to Calif. by 1872.Wm. J (b. abt. 1830) is my grandmother's (her maiden name is Steinhoff) great-grandfather.It is an uncommon name and I assume that all Steinhoffs in Canada would be related.
Some very helpful researchers shared some information about Steinhoff family in Ontario, Canada.I was in NJ a couple times and found some tax info in Sussex County (I think that's the right county --going from memory here) on a John Steinhoff.Apparently there was also a hessian soldier by that name who is not the same.I found a "John Stine" on a muster roll in NJ, but no John Steinhoff, or similar spelling. The name is found in Germany and Holland.
If you e-mail me at firstname.lastname@example.org we can compare notes.I'm still hunting for that illusive connection! Thanks!
