Dan,
This is just my rationale.
My Grandfather and, obviously, mother was a Stenger.
The stars would reflect 'the stars of Europe'; a symbol of solidarity as well as being sovereign from Roman rule.
I'd assume the grain in the crest is either wheat or barley, not corn. They are two of the most predominate grains of Germany, and the two most common malted grains of German beer.Yum...
The harp has me curious, as well. The symbol of a harp has, historically, been connected with hunting. The term "bow harp" is associated with the sound which a hunter's bow makes when released.I would like to think that the harp has as much do do with music as it does with gathering of food.
Any other guesses?
