GEORGE STEPHENS
I AM SEARCHING FOR ANCESTORS/FAMILY OF GEORGE STEPHENS B.1790 Va. The first record I have of him was in Breathitt Co.,KY. in 1839. He and Elizabeth Alsept (b.1808 Harlan Co.,KY.)were accused of adultery. These charges were dismissed two years later. I never found a marriage license.
I found George in the 1840 Floyd Co.,KY. census next to Elizabeth Howard who I think was the same woman.
George and Elizabeth had a son born in 1840 in Breathitt Co. named William Stephens.
They had another son born in 1843 in Breathitt Co. named Elijah Stephens (my g. grandfather). George paid taxes while on Quicksand Creek, Breathitt Co. from 1841 through 1851.
Elizabeth had two children prior to meeting George Stephens. Robert Alsept b. 1828 Floyd Co.,KY.(meadows of the Licking River) and Margaret Alsept b. ca. 1834 in same co. Henry Patrick was their father.
George ,Elizabeth, William and Elijah weretogether in the 1860 Magoffin Co.,KY. census. George was living in the home of his son William Stephens in the 1870 Magoffin Co. census. Don't know what happened to Elizabeth in that census. George died in Magoffin Co.,KY. near Salyersville about 1879.
George was about 49 years old when I first found him in KY. (1790-1839). He must have had a family/life some where before this? Family stories tell of him coming into KY. walking through some large rock cliffs and seeing honey bees among the rocks. He was carrying a gun and a turkey when he met Elizabeth washing clothes along the river.
Family stories about Elizabeth indicate she was the daughter of a horse trader from TN. (some say Daniel Alsup/Alsop). He (Daniel) met a Howard girl from Harlan Co.,KY. and Elizabeth was born out of wedlock about 1808. Elizabeth's father died and she was sent back to the Howard family. The Howard family moved to present day Royalton, KY. to work in the stave mill when Elizabeth was about 12 years old (ca.1820). This is in Magoffin Co. now. This is where she met Henry Patrick.
I did find a George Stephens in Lee Co.,Va. in 1806 and 1807 on the personal tax list. In the same co. in 1837,1838 and 1839 he was on a 9 1/2 acre land deed. Don't know if this is my George. There was a note about his address being unknown. Seems to fit.
Would appreciate any input on this mysterious man!
