Re: Jefferson Co TN Sterlings 1794-1900
I am descended from Katy (Catherine) Sterling who married Robert Stevenson in KnoxCo TN Nov 18, 1806 or 1808. The record must be difficult to read. It is transcribed as Hettie and Kittie, as Sterling and Stirling, and as 1806 and 1808.The family moved to Haywood Co. NC. By 1850 and earlier, she was the "Widow Catherine Stephenson." Robert Medford who puts out a "census" on Haywood Co. NC incorrectly labeled her as "Cassandra Allison, dau of Hezekiah Allison who my John Stephens in Haywood Co. NC" This just is not true. Going back on the earlier Haywood Co. Census, it is apparent that only the family of Robert had the number of children, males and females, to match the children of the Widow Catherine, per their marriage bonds/licenses. Plus the census and death records indicate that Catherine and one or more of her older children were born near Knoxville, TN.
She named her two sons John P. and James L., sound like her brothers' names to me!
Samuel Sterling signed the marriage bond for Kattie/Katy/Catherine and Robert Stephenson. Who was he? I have found on the net that both Catherine's parents were Sterlings. The will for her paternal grandfather John Sterling who married Catherine Taylor is in Jefferson Co. TN.John Sterling also has court records over land from the will of Isaac Taylor. Could this be Catherine's father or brother?
