styles/stiles>bank robberies and train

HELP!!!Have been told that some of my ancestors rode with Jessie James and robbed banks in Minnesota, I think.Also something about train robberies.Does anybody know anything about this.
Also would like to know why stiles changed to styles over the years.Our ancestors started out spelling it stiles, and then it changes to styles.
