Clark, Yes, you are right.Chadwell did use the name of Stiles as an alias. Apparently Bill Stiles had quite a reputation in St. Paul for various feats and Chadwell would assume that identity to suit his purposes. Chadwell had used the name of Stiles in Northfield several daysprior to the raid and naturally would have been identified with that name. As for the real Stiles, when he was escaping the area, possibly in company with the James boys, it was to his advantage to be "dead" as long as possible. Also, Stiles was connected as various tome to the names of "Jack Ladd and Jay Ward". It seems that Stiles and Chadwell did get along and had a history together. Chadwell had rescued Stiles from the Pinkertons some years earlier in Stillwater. It was Chadwell who introduced Stiles to Frank and Jesse James.
Many people claim to be others in history. Emmett Dalton claimed to Jesse James at one point. Interestingly, Dalton (who hated Stiles) is one of the pieces of evidence in favor of Bill Stiles' claims to the "Ninth Man". The debate goes on. Vince.
