GEN. JOHN SULLIVAN'S FAMILY AND THE LOCKWOOD
FAMILY INTERMARRY.
"From the two sons and three daughters of Mary Sullivan, who was a sister of General John Sullivan,
and who married Theophilus Hardy, who died in 1827, aged seventy-five years;" have sprung many
descendants who have INTERMARRIED WITH LOCKWOODS, Appletons, Bellows, and others, etc.
"Mrs. Hardy possessed a mind of uncommon strength, clear, discriminating and logical. It was well
cultivated and stored with knowledge of the world and of human nature. Her strong understanding led
her to discuss and decide questions which would be ordinarily considered difficult of solution. She had
the power in a great degree of communicating her views and thoughts. No one could more effectually
teach and instruct others as far as her information extended. Her stature was large, and in person she
was dignified and commanding."
"Her youngest daughter, Margery, was the mother of Judge Samuel Wells, of Maine, who was also
Governor of that State, and John Sullivan Wells, of Concord, N. H., who was Attorney-General and
United States Senator, and Lieutenant-Governor Joseph Bartlett, of Illinois, and Ferdinand Birt, U. S.
Consul, at Bermuda." (N. E. Hist. and Gen. Reporter, vol. 19, p. 305 and p. 307.)

3PREFACE
In the entire field of American bibliography there is, perhaps, at thepresent time, no single subject of
more interest to so great a number ofpeople in the United States as genealogy. This is demonstrated by
the numerous lists of manuscripts and printed books upon the subject. Initself this fact is not
remarkable, except for the further fact that genealogyhas taken its place in American bibliography,
within the present generation.
From the first English settlement in America, at Jamestown, in 1607,and that of the Pilgrims, at
Plymouth, in 1620, excepting in family Biblerecords and a few manuscripts, genealogical history was a
blank, so faras printed records are concerned, until 1771. In that year, what is believedto have beep
the first American family genealogy was printed at Hartford,Conn. Its title page reads: "Genealogy of
the Family of Mr. SamuelStebbins, and His Wife, From the Year 1707 to the Year 1771." In 1829,
Farmer's "A Genealogical Register of the First Settlers of New England,"the first collected work in
genealogy in America, was published. In 1844,James Savage, LL.D. (1784-1873), eminent as a
historian and antiquarian, and president of the Massachusetts Historical Society, perceiving the great
value of Farmer's register to future generations, undertook the compilationof "The Genealogical
Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England,"and published it in four volumes, 1860-1864. This work
of Savage's is
still regarded as the authority on early New England genealogy and is thedistinguishing mark of the first
epoch in American genealogy. Savage maybe said to have been the father of American genealogy.
Subsequent to the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and theMexican War, the first three
patriotic societies were formed: The Societyof the Cincinnati, in 1783; the Society of the War of 1812, in
1814, and the Aztec Club of 1847, in 1847. These organizations kept aflame the patriotic spirit which is
the soul of American genealogy.

the Sullivan whose name was taken by the Sept of Sullivan and hence, from the fourteenth King of

John and Margery are buried in the Sullivan burial ground.
See NH Historical Society Proceedings, Vol. 4 article of Major Sullivan by Mr. John Scales. He signed a

History of Newfields, New Hampshire, 1638-1911", Rev. James Hill Fitts, Concord, New Hampshire, 1912
, p. 542, John Sullivan was of Somersworth when daughter Mary married Theophilus Hardy.
The John Sullivan mentioned here probably is a son or grandson:
Arthur Rogers was the son of the famous Ranger and was probably quite well educated. He studied for
the bar with John Sullivan of Durham, and with his cousin, Edward St. Loe Livermore of Concord, in
which town he opened an office in 1793. (see The Bench and Bar of New Hampshire).

this was called the "girls room". Here she lived, cooked in the open fireplace, and taught ("History of the
Town of Durham", p. 261). Theophilus:
Authorities disagree as to the parentage of this Theophilus Hardy. Doctor Edwin A. Hardy of Toronto,
Canada, who has done a great deal of research work in connection with his family, has become
convinced that the father of Theophilus Hardy, Jr., was a son of Theophilus and Sarah (Follet) Hardy of
Durham, New Hampshire (Hardy & Hardie, p. 358). There are conflicting evidences and it is equally
possible that Theophilus Hardy, Jr., was the son of another Theophilus Hardy, who came to this country
about 1720.
Theophilus Hardy was mentioned as a kinsman in the will of Biley Dudley, dated January 24, 1723 and
probated July 4, 1728. He was a witness in 1768 (History of Newfields, New Hampshire 1638-1911, Rev.
James Hill Fitts, Concord, New Hampshire, 1912, page 542).
Theophilus, Jr. was a minor child when his parents died. Theophilus Hardy of Durham made bond with
John Sullivan of Durham and Walter Bryent, Jr. of Newmarket as sureties, for payment of their shares to
Mary Hardy, Sarah Hardy, Love Hardy and Nathaniel Hardy, July 26, 1769. So he must have become an
adult by this time. John Sullivan was his father-in-law. This proves that he was the son of Theophilus and
Love Hardy of Durham.
Theophilus Hardy, Jr. lived in Durham, New Hampshire. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and
served under his brother-in-law, Major-General John Sullivan, who was President (Convener) of New
Hampshire and a lawyer at Durham, New Hampshire. They lived near Gen. John Sullivan, her brother.
Theophilus Hardy was in camp at Sewall's Point, September 26, 1775, on the Exeter river, (NH Town
Papers, 15:748).
Theophilus Hardy served in Capt. John Hill's Company in Col. Joshua Wingate's Regiment, which joined
the Continental Army in Rhode Island in 1778 (NH Town Papers, 15:578).

Dover, N. H.
His widow married Richard Nason, who was of Dover, N. H., some years, but at time of his
death, was resident of York county,
Me., where his will was recorded.
1694. Will (proved 1696), of
Richard Nason, made in this year, names his own children, and also those of his wife Abigail by
her first
husband, Nicholas Follett. These children were Nicholas Follett2 and Sarah Meader; and mention was
also made of
Sarah, child of Mary Witham, the latter evidently being another daughter, who had died,
leaving issue. The widow of Nicholas
Follett had no children by her second marriage.

DUDLEY Governor Thomas Dudley, the immigrant ancestor, was born about 1676, near Northampton,
England, son of Captain Roger Dudley, a military man who lived in the time of Robert Dudley, Queen
Elizabeth's famous earl of Leicester, and appears to have been one of his soldiers, sent by the queen to
aid Henry of Navarre to establish his throne, and to have fallen in the famous battle of Ivry. His mother
was a kinswoman of Augustine Nicholls, of Faxton, in Northamptonshire, who was born at Ecton in that
county in 1559, was judge of the court of common pleas and knight of the bath, etc., keeper of the great
seal to Prince Charles, and of a distinguished family. Governor Dudley's mother must have died when he
was very young, and Mrs. Burefoy, a relative, took care of him. When a young boy he became a page in
the establishment of the earl of Northampton. It is said that he was "a man of high spirit, suitable to the
family to which his father belonged." In 1597, when he was twenty-one, he was a volunteer when men
were raised to help Henry of Navarre, and was given a captain's commission, raising a company of
eighty in Northampton. He was assigned to Amiens in Picardy, but peace was declared before he saw
service. He then became clerk for his kinsman, Judge Augustine Nicholls, until August, 1616, when the
judge died and he became steward of the earl of Lincoln; by shrewd management he cleared a debt of œ
100,000 on the earl's estate in a few years. He resigned this position in 1627, and moved to Boston,
Lincolnshire, where Rev. John Cotton preached. The earl of Lincoln soon wished his services again and
there he remained until he came to this country. In 1627 Dudley became interested in America and in
1628, with other Puritans, procured a patent from the king for a plantation here. Others came before he
did, but in April, 1630, with Winthrop and a party of four ships, he sailed for America, and was appointed
assistant, and March 23, 1629-30, at the last court held in England, deputy governor of the colony. He
came on the "Arabella," arriving June 12, 1630, and settled at Newtown, now Cambridge. He soon
moved to Ipswich, and he had large grants at various times. He was one of the first four signers of the
covenant of the First Church at Charlestown, where he was then living, in July, 1630, but which moved to
Boston a few months later. In May, 1634, he was elected governor to succeed Winthrop, and was
reelected in 1640-45-50; deputy governor for thirteen years, and sometimes assistant. He was the first
governor chosen by the people at a general election. He was one of the twelve men appointed by the
general court to establish Harvard College in 1636, and when the charter of the college was granted in
1650, Dudley as governor signed it. In 1644 he was sergeant-major-general of the colony. He was in
office four years, the first to hold this position. He died at Roxbury, July 31, 1653. Cotton Mather said of
him: "He was a man

of sincere piety, exact justice, hospitality to strangers and liberality to the poor." His will, dated April 26,
1652, additions April 13, May 28 and July 8, 1653, was proved August 15, 1653. He married (first) in
England, Dorothy (???), who died at Roxbury, December 27, 1643, aged sixty-one. He married (second)
April 14, 1644, Catharine Hackburn, widow of Samuel Hackburn, and daughter of (???) Dighton. She
had two sons and two daughters by her first marriage. She married (third) Rev. John Allen, of Dedham,
and she died August 29, 1671. Children by first wife: Samuel, mentioned below; Anne, born in England,
about 1612; Patience, in England; Sarah, baptized July 23, 1620, at Sempringham, England; Mercy,
born September 27, 1621, England. By second wife: Deborah, February 27, 1645; Joseph, September 23

Dover, N. H.
His widow married Richard Nason, who was of Dover, N. H., some years, but at time of his
death, was resident of York county, Me., where his will was recorded. 1694. Will (proved 1696), of
Richard Nason, made in this year, names his own children, and also those of his wife Abigail by her first
husband, Nicholas Follett. These children were Nicholas Follett2 and Sarah Meader; and mention was
also made of Sarah, child of Mary Witham, the latter evidently being another daughter, who had died,
leaving issue. The widow of Nicholas Follett had no children by her second marriage.

(II) Rev. Samuel Dudley, son of Governor Thomas Dudley, was born about 1610, in Northamptonshire,
England, and was probably educated for the ministry in the Puritan denomination. He came to New
England with his father when he was twenty, and in 1632 or 1633, married Mary, daughter of Governor
Winthrop, and their first three children were baptized in Boston. The two sons lived many years with their
grandfather, Governor Dudley, and both died early and unmarried. Rev. Samuel Dudley moved from
Cambridge to Ipswich about 1635. His wife died in 1643, and he married (second) Mary Byley or Bayley,

By second wife: Deborah, February 27, 1645; Joseph, September 23
, 1647; Paul, September 8, 1650.
