Overton and Habrum Sutherland from Duplin, NC
I am descended from Overton Southern, who appears, based on census records, to have shortened his name from Southerland. In the 1830 census, he is listed as Sutherland, and then in 1840 as Sutherlin, and in 1850 as Southern.Eventually, the name changed again in the late 1800s to Southers.
In the 1830 census for Duplin County, NC, Habrum and Overton Sutherland are enumerated next to each in the records, indicating they are neighbors. In 1840, both are found living in Lawrence County, IN, just a few families apart in the enumeration.Given the uniqueness of the first name, it is likely these are the same two individuals, and it is likely, given they appear to have moved together, that they are related.
Overton's year of birth is between 1803 and 1805, based on census and death records, while Habrum appears to have been born between 1810 and 1812.Each had a son named John, son named William and daughter named Sarah.Habrum also had a son named Milton.
I would be interested in exchanging any information if you have anything on the Sutherland families from Duplin.Thanks.
